Contemporary transformation Maastricht

A balanced experience of light in a harmonious home

For the renovation of a charming townhouse in Maastricht we collaborated closely with the clients to create a unique design. A week from their lives written in scenes served as the inspiration for the transformation of this home. The townhouse’s front facade has been preserved in its original state to ensure it harmonises with the historic streetscape. The rear facade has been designed as a cohesive whole with the dormer window, bathroom extension and ground-floor extension all executed in the same materials. This results in a modern yet consistent appearance.

The existing utility room was incorporated into the extension with the removal of the kitchen wall creating a spacious open-plan kitchen. The new kitchen is angled towards the structural column of the rear facade allowing the living kitchen to open up towards the garden. The living area now has an L-shape featuring large glass doors leading to the garden which flood the space with natural light. The expansive transparent rear facade combined with the unique skylights enhances the sense of being outdoors. A new long partition wall with sliding doors running from the front door to the kitchen seamlessly unites the living space on the ground floor. Next to the staircase a new spacious toilet has been added complete with a shower area. The extension also serves as a terrace for the bedroom and bathroom above with skylights incorporated to bring additional daylight to the ground floor.

On the first floor a spacious master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom has been created offering access to the rooftop terrace on the extension. The bedroom features a custom-designed walk-in wardrobe which also serves as a passage to the study with a library. On the landing an antique cabinet belonging to the clients has been integrated into the wall at the same height as the walk-in wardrobe creating a harmonious storage element. The second floor accommodates two bedrooms each with its own ensuite bathroom. A dormer window provides additional space and light in the rear bedroom.

The garden features a terrace that seamlessly connects to the house complete with an integrated vegetable garden and a rain barrel extending from the new kitchen. Above the glass facade nest boxes have been placed in the rear wall providing a safe haven for birds and enriching the garden life. At the rear of the garden a low storage unit has been designed for bicycle parking partially enclosed. The area between the terrace and the shed has been transformed into a green oasis with various plant species and a pathway weaving through it. This renovation blends historical elements with modern functionalities resulting in a home that is both stylish and practical perfectly suited to the clients’ lifestyle.
