Finally, we can share with you that we’ve been working for two years on a remarkable new piece of the city Utrecht: Merwede, a sustainable neighborhood! Based on the urban design by BURA, this project transforms a 24-hectare industrial site into a vibrant urban district. It’s the first example of Utrecht’s ambition for sustainable and healthy urbanization. Within the city blocks, designed by architecture firm GroupA and comimissioned by Greystar, we have designed four residential buildings with distinctive identities.
Each building has its own unique residential character. De Grafische Drager features a rational grid with playful pink-toned canopies, housing Utrecht’s future students. The Module is a studio-apartment building with striking yellow brick patterns, paying attention to bricks with low CO₂ emissions. Doxa presents a modest design with horizontal brick lines, incorporating a selection of bricks from nearby projects. The final and boldest design, De Sculptuur, is a green corner-building that empasizes its corner accent and has unique façade stones.
